The UHI Millennium Institute entered the higher education sector on 1 April 2001 when the Scottish Parliament declared its legal designation as a Higher Education Institution, funded by the Scottish Council for Higher Education and eligible to apply for degree-awarding powers in its own right. |

deepest loch - Loch Morar (1,1080ft), both in Lochaber. |

The Cromarty Firth, a base in two world wars for the British Home Fleet, provides the finest natural deepwater anchorage on the east coast of Britian. It is run by the Cromarty Firth Port Authority. |

| The Field of Culloden, near Inverness, is the scene of the last pitched land battle fought on British soil. The National Trust for Scotland runs the Culloden Visitor Centre and has responsibility for looking after the mass graves of the Jacobite and Hanoverian soldiers who died in the battle. |
